Chicago Police use Heat List to Warn Potential Victims / Criminals

Chicago Police Department

That’s correct.

According to the Chicago Tribune, the Chicago Police Department is using a computer generated system to help identify persons who may become victims of violence or criminal offenders themselves.

Based on input from associations, past involvement in criminal activity or presence when a crime has occurred – to name just a couple – this system resulted in in-person meetings with the highest priority persons as generated by the list.

This “two degrees of association” ranking system has alarmed some folks who don’t feel it was appropriate for them to be included in the list. It has also been correct, as with “Jacobi Herring, who was fatally shot this month as he walked home in his South Chicago neighborhood” according to the Tribune.
